Eight killed in road accidents

Eight people were killed and two persons injured in road accidents during the last two days, according to reports from our local correspondents.

In Gazipur, a police officer died when a speeding pickup hit him in Kaliakair upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased, identified as Jamal Uddin, 56, served as a sub-inspector in the traffic division of the district police.

Md Zubair, inspector (operation) of Kaliakair Police Station, said Jamal was performing his duties in the Palli Bidyut area on the Dhaka-Tangail highway when the pickup hit him from behind, around 7:30am.

He was declared dead at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.

In Narayanganj, Bachchu Mia, a 55-year-old rickshaw-puller, died when a Dhaka-bound truck crashed into his three-wheeler, after hitting a road divider on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the Signboard area yesterday.

The accident occurred after the truck overturned as the driver lost control over the vehicle, said Inspector Md Shorfuddin of Shimrail Police Outpost under Kanchpur Highway Police Station.

On Wednesday night, a Chattogram-bound truck ran over a woman, approximately 23 years old, and a 30-year-old man, while they were crossing the highway in the same area, according to witnesses.

The accident occurred around 10:00pm. The identities of the victims could not be known immediately. Police seized both the trucks but the drivers managed to flee.

In Chapainawabganj, two persons were killed in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a human haulier in Puskunir Par area under Shibganj upazila yesterday.

Both the victims -- Khalesa Begum, 70, from Barik Bazar village, and Toton Horidas, 35, from Selinabad in Shibganj -- were in the auto-rickshaw.

In Thakurgaon, a girl lost her life when an easy bike hit her while she was crossing a road in Rupganj village, Baliadangi upazila, on Wednesday afternoon.

Rafia Akhter, 6, daughter of Shahjahan Ali from the same village, died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

In Siraganj, a rickshaw-van puller died and two others sustained injuries as a truck collided with their three-wheeler on the Sirajganj-Kazipur road in the Shahangasa bridge area, under Sadar upazila, yesterday.

Badsha Alom, 40, from Bogura died on the spot.   The injured were admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital.
