7 killed in Jashore road accident

At least seven people, including five members of a family, were killed after a bus hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw in the Lebutola area of Jashore's Sadar upazila today.

The deceased are Mahima Khatun, 48, Rahima Khatun, 30, and their grandchildren Hasan, 3, Hossain, 3. Rahima's youngest daughter Jeba, 6, and the autorickshaw driver Imran Hossen, 25, also died in the accident.

The identity of one of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The incident took place on the Jashore-Magura highway around 7:45pm, said Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jashore Kotwali Police Station, reports our Benapole correspondent.

Police and members of the victims' family said the six members of the family were going to Jashore General Hospital on the auto-rickshaw to meet an ailing relative.

When they reached Lebutala, a speeding bus of Royal Paribahan hit the auto-rickshaw, leaving six dead on the spot. One more died at the hospital.

Additional superintendent of Police of Jashore Belal Hossain said seven people including the auto-rickshaw driver died in the accident.

The bodies have been sent to the morgue for autopsies.
