9 killed, 50 injured as 2 buses collide in Rangpur

Nine people were killed and at least 50 were injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Rangpur-Dinajpur highway in Rangpur early today (September 5, 2022).

The accident took place near Kharubhaj Bridge in Taraganj upazila around 12:30am, reports our local correspondent quoting Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge of Taraganj Highway Police Station.

A bus of Joyana Paribahan collided with a bus of Islam Paribahan while it was raining in the area, locals said.

Members of police and fire service recovered five bodies from the spot.

The others succumbed while being treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, said Md Farhaduzzaman, emergency doctor at the hospital.

However, the death toll may rise further, the rescue workers suspected.

The deceased were yet to be identified, the OC said.

At least 50 injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital some of whom are in critical condition, he added.

The district administration is preparing to take responsibility for medical expenses of the injured persons. They will also give Tk 20,000 to each deceased's family for burial.
