5 killed, 4 injured in road accidents

Five people were killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in Cumilla, Gazipur and Sylhet districts yesterday and on Monday.
In Cumilla, three people were killed as a bus hit a motorcycle and then two pedestrians on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Chandina upazila yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Alamgir Hossain, Abul Kalam and Baharam, said Md Mamun, in-charge of Illiotganj Highway Police Outpost.
The accident happened at Harikhola area on the highway around 10:00am, leaving motorcyclist Alamgir dead on the spot and two others injured, he said.
The others succumbed to their injuries after they were rushed to Chandina Upazila Health Complex.
The driver of the bus fled the scene.
Filing of a case in this regard was underway, said the police official.
In Gazipur, a bus driver was killed and two others were injured, as the bus fell into a roadside ditch after hitting an electric pole in Sreepur upazila early yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Mofizul Islam, 30, of Sohadia village in Sreepur upazila. Detailed identities of the injured Maruf and Sajib could not be obtained immediately.
The accident occurred around 6:45am, when the bus carrying workers of "Smart Factory" hit an electric pole and fell into the roadside ditch near Sohadia area on Mauna-Bormi regional road of Bormi union, said Aminul Islam, a sub-inspector of Sreepur Police Station.
"The driver died on the spot," he said.
Locals rescued the injured and sent them to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, from where they were later sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for better treatment, said Asma Khatun, a doctor at the health complex.
In Sylhet, a local Awami League leader was killed and two others were injured as a truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction at Charkhai area of Beanibazar upazila on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Fakhrul Islam, 45, of Parkul Barabari in Rajaganj union of Kanighat upazila. He was the science and technology affairs secretary of Rajaganj Union AL unit.
The accident occurred around 8:00pm on Sylhet-Zakiganj Road, leaving the trio injured, said Debdulal Dhar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Beanibazar Police Station.
Fakhrul died on the way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The two others are now receiving treatment at the hospital, he said.
"We seized the truck and three-wheeler from the spot, but the truck driver managed to flee," the OC added.
