5 drown to death after bulkhead hits trawler in Chandpur
Five people died after a trawler capsized in Dakatia river after being hit by a bulkhead in Chandpur this morning.
The deceased were identified as Mobarok Hossain (36), Al Amin (35), Nasir Uddin (32), Kala (35) and Awal Majhi (50). They are all from Muradnagar and Titas of adjacent Cumilla district.
The accident occurred in Mominpur area of Chandpur Sadar upazila around 7am, said Mohammad Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Chandpur Model Police Station.
Police and witnesses said the trawler, carrying soil to a brick field, capsized after the bulkhead collided with it.
Among the total 11 passengers of the trawler, six swam ashore while the rest could not manage it.
On information, river police and firefighting units rushed to the spot and with the help of locals recovered a dead body and rescued an injured person, who later died on way to a hospital, reports a Chandpur correspondent.
The rescue team recovered three bodies from inside the trawler after they pulled out the sunken vessel from the river around 11am.
Police have already seized the bulkhead "Iqbal-1".
