4 women dead as train hits auto-rickshaw in Nilphamari
Four passengers of an auto-rickshaw died today when the vehicle was hit by Shimanto Express train at an open rail crossing in Nilphamari Sadar upazila.
Three more people, including the auto-rickshaw driver, were injured in the accident which took place at 6:30am today.
The deceased were identified as Romana Akhter (25), Shefali Begum (35), Saira Banu (28), and Minara Begum (25). They were residents of Dhanipara and Koranipara villages of the upazila and worked in different factories of Uttara EPZ, reports our local correspondent quoting police.
Quoting eyewitnesses and locals, Nilphamari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Abdur Rauf, said that the Chilahati-bound train hit the auto-rickshaw near Darwani station in Sadar upazila's Dhanipara area.
Three passengers died on the spot. Minara Begum died after being taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, said the OC.
Three injured are currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital, said the OC, adding that there were nine people in the auto-rickshaw. Of them, two were able to get off the vehicle just before the accident.
The accident is believed to have happened due to dense fog, the OC added.
