3 teenagers drown in Gazipur canal

Three teenagers drowned today while bathing in Labandah canal in Panishail area of ​​Gazipur Sadar upazila and one girl went missing.

The deceased were identified as Richie Akhter (15), Irene Akhter (14) and Maya Akhter (14), said Tashruf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Joydebpur Fire Service Station, reports our Gazipur correspondent.

Another child, Riya Akhter (10) is still missing.

"Around five-six girls including Richie, Riya, Irene and Maya went to bathe in the canal. At one point, the four of them suddenly were swept by the current in the canal. Two of them managed to reach the shore," said Tashruf.

"People in the area could not rescue them and informed the Gazipur Fire Service. Around 1:30 pm, the fire service personnel came and recovered the bodies of three while Riya Akhter is still missing," he said.

The search for the Riya is still going on, said Joydebpur Fire Service Inspector Abdur Razzak Mia.
