2 univ students die on roads
Two university students were killed in separate road accidents in Noakhali and Bogura yesterday.
In Noakhali, the dead was identified as Sabrina Akhtar Mitu, 22, a third year student of the journalism and mass communication department of Jagannath university.
The accident occurred when a recklessly driven brick-laden truck hit Mitu on the Sonaimuri-Cumilla regional road on Sonaimuri upazila's Rampur area at noon.
She died on the spot, police said.
Mitu, daughter of Murtaza Bhuiyan of the upazila, was visiting her maternal grandfather's house in the area, said Mridul Kanti Kuri, officer-in-charge of Chandganj Highway Police Station.
The speeding truck hit her when she was crossing the road to catch a bus for Dhaka around 12:00pm.
Locals managed to seize the truck but the driver and his helper managed to flee, the OC said, adding that legal procedures in this regard are underway.
Mitu's uncle Abidur Rahman said she lived with her parents in Dhaka and was about to come back to the capital as her vacation ended.
Meanwhile in Bogura, Kamran Hossain Mohan, 23, a third year student of the English department at Pundra University of Science and Technology, was killed when a sand-laden truck hit his bike on the Bogura-Naogaon regional highway in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon.
Kamran, son of Raisul Islam of Bogura's Kahaloo upazila, was going home on his motorbike after finishing a semester exam, said Masud Rana, sub-inspector of Bogura Sadar Police Station.
When he was on the highway, a sand-laden truck hit his bike from behind. Kamram fell and was crushed under the truck's wheel around 2:30pm, the SI said.
He died on the spot.
The truck was seized but driver managed to flee the spot, he added.
Family members of the deceased don't want to file a case and they have taken the dead body without autopsy, he added.
