Bangalee settlers call for hartal in CHT today
Parbattya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad (PBCP) has called a daylong hartal in three hill districts for today, demanding cancellation of CHT Land Commission Act amendment proposal passed by the cabinet on Monday.
The districts are Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari.
The shutdown was called on Tuesday, says a press release signed by the leaders of PBCP, a platform of Bangalee settlers.
The proposal to amend the act with planned changes will go against the Bangalees in the hill areas, said the leaders.
They further said that following the amendment, the commission became one-sided as the Bangalees were being deprived of their fundamental rights.
At a press conference in the town, Parbattya Somo Odhikar Andolan (SOA) announced a daylong road and waterway blockade in CHT for today.
Meanwhile, the headmen in CHT have placed a 13-point demand to strengthen the local traditional institution and make it more effective.
The demands include increasing the allowances of headmen up to Tk 7000 from 1000 and Karbaris to Tk 3000 from Tk 500, bringing amendment to the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission, full execution of CHT peace deal, setting up local offices with adequate staffs, involve headmen in development programmes, declaration of 3-day holiday during 'Biju festival' in CHT, setting up office for headmen at proposed 'Parbattya Bhaban' in Dhaka, making traditional institutions effective and allocation of fund for them.
The demands were placed at a press conference organised by CHT Headmen Network in the town on Tuesday.
