Rape-Murder of 6th-Grader: Mother still kept at police station
Police have arrested the key suspect in the rape and murder of a sixth grader at Bablatala Bazar in Kolapara upazila of Patuakhali yesterday.
Meanwhile, the victim's mother has been kept in Mohipur Police Station for two days, as police brought her in after the incident to help with investigation.
Yesterday morning, hundreds of villagers, including some women, went to the police station, demanding the mother's release. However, police are yet to release her.
Asked, Ismail Gharamee, the victim's father, said that police told him his wife, Salma Begum, was “not in custody or arrested, but was kept in the station to help police get information regarding the incident.”
“We are taking help from the victim's mother for information and that is why we kept her at the police station,” said Jalal Ahmed, additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Kolapara police circle.
Confirming the arrest of the key suspect of the rape and murder Mizanur Rahman, office-in-charge of Mohipur Police Station, said the arrestee was Kawsar Gharamee, 22, son of Shamsul Haq Gharamee.
“Based on information, we conducted a drive and arrested Kawsar,” he said, adding that the victim's father, Ismail, who filed the case, said that Kawsar was the key suspect. The case statement, however, did not mention any names.
Ismail said that on Monday, Kawsar's goat entered their home's premises and ate from their trees. Eva, the victim, forced the goat out. Kawsar, also a distant relative of the victim, threatened Eva for mistreating his goat and said “he will see to the matter later”.
“This might be the reason he raped and killed her,” Ismail said, adding that he suspected Kawsar of the rape and murder all along.
Police will interrogate Kawsar for further information, OC Mizanur said.
ASP Jamal briefed reporters about the arrest at around 1:00pm at Mohipur Police Station.
“We hope to give you good news over the matter soon,” he said.
After an autopsy at Patuakhali General Hospital, the body was brought back to her house and buried at a family graveyard on Wednesday.
On Tuesday night, a sixth-grader was killed after allegedly being raped by four people at her home. Her mother, who was at home with her two minor sons when the incident took place, was also sexually abused, alleged her relatives.
