3 die from toxic gas in septic tank

Three people were killed and one was injured after they entered a septic tank of an under-construction building in Narsingdi yesterday.

Doctors say they had died due to inhaling toxic gas and lack of oxygen.

The incident took place in Bilasdi Bank Colony area under Narsingdi municipality around 4:00pm.

The deceased were identified as Sirajul Islam, 35, contractor of the building, of Chandpur, and workers Ramiz Uddin, 20, and Rakib Miah, 21, of Shibpur upazila in Narsingdi.

Sub-Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Md Shafiqul Islam said Ramiz and Rakib climbed down the septic tank for the finishing work.

At one stage, they stopped responding and contractor Sirazul got down to see what had happened. He also turned silent. Jamal, another worker, fell sick as he peeped into the tank.

The trio were later rescued and taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Dr Mizanur Rahman, residential medical officer, told The Daily Star that the three were brought dead.
