Babu a victim of intra-party conflict?
Noor-e- Alam Babu, the slain general secretary of the BNP unit of ward 43, was a victim of intra-party conflict, believe police and local people.
They said Babu was not involved in criminal activities and there was no case against him. But he reportedly harassed some BNP leaders and workers by lodging complaints with the police against them, after the BNP returned to power in October 2001.
Babu, according to the locals, made enemies by quickly becoming the BNP leader of the ward. Many within the party could not accept his emergence as their leader.
Babu managed to develop good relations with the BNP leadership. "He set up a primary school in the locality, naming it after the late Ziaur Rahman, and that helped him establish his supremacy in the ward.
Babu was killed in front of his newly married wife when they were returning home from a local school on Thursday afternoon. Three youths stopped his rickshaw and hacked him. He died on his way to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police could not arrest anyone in this connection till last night. Police said several teams were hunting for the criminals in Mohammadpur area since the crime was committed.
No case was filed in connection with the killing till last night.
" Investigation into the crime is not proceeding smoothly as no case has been filed," said a police official at the Mohammadpur thana yesterday. He said the case would be filed after the victim's brother comes to the city from Bhola.
Meanwhile, the body of Babu was sent to his village home at Gangapur under Borhan Uddin thana, after autopsy at the DMCH in the early hours of yesterday.
