PM Hasina’s anti-terrorism steps key in ensuring peace in and out of Bangladesh: Assam CM
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's determined steps against terrorism and extremism have been instrumental in ensuring peace both "inside and outside" Bangladesh, Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief minister of the Indian state of Assam, has said.
Lauding PM Hasina's efforts, the Assam CM said crackdown by the Bangladesh government on the insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) inside Bangladesh had "tremendously helped Assam".
"Without Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's law and order measures in Bangladesh, we would not have been able to welcome you to our peaceful Assam in this way," Sarma said during an interaction with visiting freedom fighters from Bangladesh in Guwahati on Tuesday evening.
Mentioning that he has been invited by Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen to visit Dhaka, Sarma said he may visit the neighbouring country "very soon", our New Delhi correspondent reports.
"I will make sincere efforts to honour the invitation to give a further push to civilisational ties between India and Bangladesh," Sarma tweeted today.
Recalling Assam's contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, Sarma said it was "a landmark event where nine valiant soldiers from Assam made the supreme sacrifice. Some Assam Police officers trained and equipped Mukti Bahini members."

Earlier on July 5, Momen in a letter to Sarma praised his "innovative ventures" and said his visit would provide both sides a better understanding of the developmental work that are taking place in Bangladesh.
Momen in his invitation to Sarma urged the northeastern Indian states, including Assam, to "reap the benefits" of the developmental dividends of Bangladesh.
Momen had previously visited Assam along with a delegation on May 28-29 for the third edition of the conference of Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence (NADI). India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was also present at the conference.
