China outlines 3 expectations for resolving Myanmar issue
China's State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi exchanged views with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn on the Myanmar situation yesterday (July 3, 2022) in Bagan, Myanmar.
The Cambodian foreign minister was visiting Myanmar as the Special Envoy of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi mainly elaborated on China's three expectations in this regard and appreciated Cambodia's active role in mediating the Myanmar issue since taking over the rotating chair of ASEAN.
First, China expects to work with ASEAN to push Myanmar towards political reconciliation within the bounds of the constitution and laws, and to encourage all political parties in Myanmar to put the interests of the people first, make practical and reasonable efforts, accommodate one another, and understand one another's reasonable demands in order to quickly restore peace and stability.
Second, China wants to work with ASEAN to encourage Myanmar to resume the democratic transition, and consider a political development path consistent with Myanmar's national circumstances.
Third, China expects ASEAN to uphold the "ASEAN way", continue to uphold the fundamental values of not interfering in internal affairs and the consensus-based approach, remain focused, put aside outside distractions, engage in patient coordination, constructively implement the "five-point consensus" of ASEAN, and protect the group's overall unity and leadership.
