Man who sneaked into Mamata’s house says thought it was “Police HQ”
The man, who sneaked into West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's high-security private residence in south Kolkata on Sunday, told the police that he thought it to be the Kolkata Police headquarters.
The man, whom the police identified as Hafizul Molllah (in his early 30s), had scaled a boundary wall of Mamata's residence at 34B Harish Chatterjee Street in Kalighat area around 1:20 am local time on Sunday. He was arrested after security personnel spotted him Monday morning.
Mollah, who belongs to Hashnabad in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, could not give reasons why he needed to go to the Kolkata Police headquarters in the middle of the night, according to police.
"During preliminary interrogation, the man said he mistook the CM's residence to be the Kolkata Police headquarters and entered the premises. But he could not give any proper reply when asked about why he wanted to go to the police headquarters at that hour," a police official said.
He said Mollah has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections relating to trespass or house-breaking by night after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint. He has been remanded to police custody for a week till July 11, our New Delhi correspondent reports.
Mollah during grilling had first claimed to be a fruit seller and then a "goods" vehicle driver, the officer said.
The investigating officers are verifying his claims as per his descriptions about his activities on Sunday before reaching Kalighat.
"We are verifying his claims. Our officers are trying to draw a picture of his activities throughout Sunday and when and how he arrived at Kalighat and also to find out whether he was alone or accompanied by anyone, how he managed to go past the security personnel and enter the chief minister's house premises without being caught," the police official said.
With the incident sparking a security scare, senior West Bengal government officers met at the state secretariat on Monday and reviewed Mamata's security.
