Indian Air Force to recreate 1971 Tangail, Meghna operations on Republic Day
The airdrop operation by Indian Air Force in Tangail to prevent retreating Pakistani troops from reaching Dhaka in 1971 and the helicopter-borne campaign over Meghna river for faster movement of Indian soldiers to the Bangladesh capital are expected to be recreated as part of air shows during the Indian Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26.
The Tangail and Meghna operations would be recalled by the IAF as part of its flying formations to commemorate some glorious moments of the decisive victory of Indian and Bangladesh forces over Pakistan in the 1971 Liberation War that led to the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent country, official sources said.
This year's parade, an annual ceremonial event that displays India's military might and cultural diversity, is likely to see fewer spectators due to Covid-19 pandemic, reports our New Delhi correspondent citing officials.
The January 26 parade last year was attended by nearly 25,000 spectators amid the ebbing first wave of the pandemic, compared to around 125,000 people who used to turn up to watch the spectacular event in the pre-Covid era.
