Delhi India’s most unsafe city for women, Kolkata safest: report
Delhi remains India's most unsafe city for women while Kolkata continues to be the safest metro for them, according to the latest National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report.
Although Delhi reported an overall fall in the crime rate, owing in part to the Covid-19 pandemic last year, the national capital reported the highest number of violent crimes and other crimes against women among all the metropolitan cities of India, reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting the NCRB data for 2020, released yesterday.
Kolkata has gained the top spot in the list of the country's safest cities for the second consecutive year, with the lowest rate of cognizable offences recorded, according to the report.
Kolkata, however, has slipped to the second spot in terms of crimes covered under the Indian Penal Code.
More than 10,093 cases of crimes against women were registered in Delhi last year -- more than twice the number of cases registered in Mumbai, Pune, Ghaziabad, Bangalore or Indore.
As many as 997 rapes were recorded with over half of the victims aged below 30.
According to the NCRB data, the number of cases registered under the IPC in Delhi plummeted by 18 percent between 2019 and 2020. Last year, more than 2.4 lakh cases -- or over 650 cases a day -- were registered by the Delhi Police.
