Somnur Monir Konal has been taking the Bangladesh music scene by storm since her Channel i Shera Kontho days. Recently, along with other musicians and anchors, the celebrated singer declared solidarity with the student protesters at Shahbagh in regards to the Nirapod Shorok movement. She opened up about her views on the protests, her upcoming projects and more in a conversation with The Daily Star.

You recently joined students for the protests for safer roads. What are your thoughts on these protests?

Road safety is a basic human right. I would want safer roads for my family, myself and my nation. I respect and support the students protesting for safer roads. I am pleased to see that generation z is so spirited.

On the professional front, what are your upcoming projects?

I have done some playback singing for the movies Jannat and Jodi Ekdin. Bappa Mazumder and I have collaborated for the title track of Jannat and I have sung the title track of Jodi Ekdin with Tahsan Khan, who is also acting in the film. I also hope to have my solo project out in winter.

You have spent many years in Kuwait. What do you like and miss the most about the country?

I miss the food – the kababs and the shwarmas. Middle-eastern food is wonderful.

On a lighter note, what are your hobbies besides singing?

I enjoy painting and cooking. I am always excited to try out new recipes.
