Antu needs 18 months to recover fully
Antu Barua, who sustained severe injuries in her right eye in a cocktail blast during Thursday's hartal called by BNP-led 18-party alliance, has already recovered 70 percent and will take around 18 months to fully recover.
Prof Deen Mohd Noorul Huq, director of National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) yesterday told The Daily Star, adding that Antu's CT scan report showed there was no splinter in her eye.
However, the doctor said Antu might suffer from cataract, glaucoma or other complications in near future and if those happen then she would have to undergo regular consultation with doctors for around three years or the rest of her life to face those.
The 14-year-old girl Antu had a surgery at Chittagong Medical College Hospital soon after the incident occurred on the second day of the 36-hour countrywide shutdown and later, was shifted to the NIO in the capital.
With the hope of fast recovery, Antu in her bed in NIO cabin said, "I just want to return home and start my study”, and tears rolled down her checks.
Shilpi Barua, mother of the girl, said my daughter obtained GPA 4.78 in Junior School Certificate exam and wants to be a doctor.
But now Antu's parents are living in frustration and uncertainty regarding their daughter's future. "The incident has panicked my daughter, sometimes she suddenly wakes up at night and start crying,” she grieved.
After all this difficulties, the parents have seen a ray of hope as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assured them of taking the whole responsibility of Antu's medical treatment.
Thanking the premier, Antu's father Anjan Barua said we do not want the trial but we really want that such incident never occur in anyone else's life.
