Ansar men keep watch on bridges

Photo: StarMembers of Ansar and Village Defence Party have been deployed at 29 bridges and culverts in Jhenidah as a precautionary measure in the wake of anti-government demonstrations in the district.
The district administration had deployed over 300 members on Monday to guard the sites against any acts of sabotage, said Jhenidah Deputy Commissioner Shafiqul Islam.
District units of the Chhatra Dal, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir yesterday staged protests in the district town to press home the opposition alliance's demand for a non-party caretaker government to oversee the next general elections.
The BNP-led 18-party alliance is going to hold rallies in the capital and elsewhere to press for the demand tomorrow.
Shailkupa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Ali Prince said 16 security men were standing guard at Kabirpur bridge over the Kumar river.
Adequate security measures had been taken at the three railway bridges of Kaliganj upazila, Kazi Delwar Hossain, sub-assistant engineer of Mobarakganj railway station, told The Daily Star.
Two of the railway bridges had been damaged by Jamaat-Shibir men on February 28, after a war crimes court sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee to death.
