Another mass charge accepted
A Dhaka court yesterday took cognisance of the charge sheet in a case against senior BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Goyeswar Chandra Roy and 38 others for torching vehicles and assaulting police in the capital's Nayapaltan last month.
Of the accused, BNP standing committee members Moudud, Abbas and Goyeswar, two lawmakers Barkatullah Bulu and Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, Joint Secretary General Aman Ullah Aman and Jubo Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal are now behind bars.
Besides, Islami Chhatra Shibir President Delwar Hossain was jailed on March 31 in the same case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan of the Speedy Trial Court-6 also issued arrest warrants against 34 others including Swechchhasebak Dal President Habibunnabi Khan Sohel and former Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salauddin Tuku as they went into hiding to avoid arrest.
The court, however, dropped charges against three accused including Jubo Dal Joint Secretary General Golam Rabbani as their involvement was not proved.
It asked officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station to submit a report by April 29 on execution of arrest warrants against the fugitives.
Upon receiving the report, the court will hear the charge sheet to decide about the merit of the case, said court sources.
Police on March 6 had filed the case with Paltan Police Station under the speedy trial act. On March 27, it submitted the charge sheet to the court.
The same court will decide today whether it will frame charges against 148 BNP leaders including opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque in a case for vandalising vehicles and assaulting police.
The leaders were detained and put behind bars on March 11. They have been denied bail twice.
The same court on April 7 took cognisance of two other cases filed against BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, senior leader Moudud Ahmed and 37 others for torching vehicles and assaulting law enforcers on March 2 in the capital.
