Another death after army arrest
A middle-aged man, who was picked up by the joint forces on Sunday, died at a hospital in Gazipur yesterday morning.
According to police, a team of the joint forces picked Abdul Khaleq up from his Shafipur house at Kaliakoir after they failed to arrest his Jubo Dal leader brother.
The 40-year-old was taken to the army camp in the area for interrogation. Next day he was handed to the Kaliakoir police.
He was later produced before the court and sent to jail where he fell sick. As his condition deteriorated he was shifted to the Sadar Hospital where he died yesterday morning.
Also yesterday, the joint forces arrested a Union Parishad chairman candidate and five notorious criminals in Barisal, Patuakhali and Jhalakathi.
Sultan Ahmed, an activist of the outlawed Sarbahara Party who has filed UP chairmanship, is accused of several crimes including murder.
Two other Sarbahara activists - Mukhles Munshi and Abdul Majid - were also arrested.
Our Feni correspondent reports that the joint forces arrested a municipal commissioner.
Also arrested yesterday, apart from Badrul Alam, are Nurul Islam, Kamal Uddin Matin, Wahidur Rahman, Momen, Nurul Absar, Nur Alam, Nasir Uddin, Najim Uddin, Sheraful Haque, all accused in several criminal cases.
In Kishoreganj, the joint forces raided the house of Syed Wahidul Islam, a senior vice-president of the district Awami League in Kharampatti area Tuesday night.
In the last 24 hours ending at 8:00am yesterday, the joint forces arrested 74 people, including 25 listed criminals, across the country.
They also seized eight firearms including one revolver, three pipe guns and one shotgun, according to a home ministry press release.
Meanwhile, a police headquarters press release said that the law-enforcers rounded up 1,249 people, including two identified criminals, across the country in the last 24 hours till 6:00am yesterday.
During the drive, police also recovered six firearms, one lethal weapon along with 19 rounds of bullet.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a press release said that they have arrested 228 people, including a listed criminal during a special drive in the capital yesterday.
Meanwhile, police yesterday took legal action against 1,161 vehicles for faulty documents while 15 vehicles were seized as the drivers failed to produce driving license and 22 others were arrested in this regard.
