AL certificate for 3 Jamaat activists!
The High Court yesterday summoned three leaders of the ruling Awami League in Satkhira to appear before it on April 16 for allegedly certifying three detained Jamaat-e-Islami activists as AL men and having good character.
Those summoned are SM Shawkat Hossain, president of the AL's Satkhira Sadar upazila unit; Amarendra Nath Ghosh, general secretary of Jhaodanga union AL unit and SM Rashedul Islam, general secretary of Ward No. 9 AL unit in Jhaodanga union.
An HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Akram Hossain Chowdhury asked them to explain why they have issued “fake certificates”.
The three Jamaat activists -- Shahidur Rahman Liton, Md Abu Sayeed and Md Sirajul Islam -- were arrested by Satkhira police while they were attacking the law enforcers, vandalising vehicles and obstructing movement of people in Amtoli area during an agitation at the call of their party on February 12.
Satkhira police the same day filed a case against 300 Jamaat-Shibir men including the three arrestees.
On February 13, the three AL leaders gave them certificates saying they are involved in AL politics, and they believe in the ideology of Bangabandhu.
The three accused yesterday filed a bail petition with the HC along with the character certificates.
The HC also asked Sub-inspector Azizul Haque of Satkhira of Satkhira police, who had filed the case, to appear before it on April 19.
Court sources said there are many instances that leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir, accused of criminal cases, have submitted such fake certificates along with bail petitions.
Contacted, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said the party was looking into the allegation of party men certifying the Jamaat men.
"If it is found true, we'll take organisational action," he added.
