AL-BNP clash in Bhola
A clash between ruling Awami League men and opposition BNP activists in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola yesterday left at least 60 people, including a police officer and three journalists, injured.
At least 15 shops, nine vehicles and party offices of the archrivals were vandalised.
Locals and police said the clash ensued when a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League men beat up Sheikh Jamal, convenor of municipality unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, a pro-BNP student body, in front of the post office around 8:30pm.
Outraged, BNP supporters vandalised several shops on Karim Road and the local Chhatra League office in Lalmohan Bazar and the clash erupted.
Awami League activists vandalised two shops owned by Chhatra Dal unit President Mijanur Rahman and 12 other shops. They also set posters and banners at the local BNP office on fire.
Superintendent of Police MD Moniruzzaman led a team to the upazila late last night to help the policemen there as the feuding groups were hurling brick chips at each other. Police fired teargas canisters and were able to control the situation around 1:00am today.
Officer-in-Charge Mijanur Rahman of Lalmohan Police Station, and local correspondents of TV channels Desh TV, Channel 24, and Diganta TV were among the injured.
The injured were admitted to Lalmohan Hospital for treatment.
