Advani agrees to return
Lal Krishna Advani, one of the founders of India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), yesterday agreed to withdraw his resignation, a day after he quit the key forums of the party.
He had resigned apparently in protest at the appointment of controversial politician Narendra Modi as the chief of the party's campaign committee for the next general elections.
BJP chief Rajnath Singh told the media here that Advani would accept the parliamentary party's decision late on Monday, rejecting the 85-year-old's resignation.
Singh met Advani yesterday to convey the parliamentary party's rejection of his resignation. Mohan Bhagwat, chief of BJP's spiritual mentor RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), also spoke to Advani and requested him to accept the decision.
However, Advani was not present in the press conference.
Singh said the concerns raised by Advani in his resignation were about the way BJP functions.
Advani had resigned from the Parliamentary Board, the National Executive and the Election Committee a day after the party ignored his reservations about Modi and anointed the Gujarat chief minister as BJP's campaign chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
