Action plan stressed to stop recurrence
A comprehensive national plan of action is needed in the country to prevent recurrence of incidents like Savar building collapse, said speakers at a seminar in the capital yesterday.
The amount of compensation in case of any death or injury of workers in garment factories should be increased so that the factory owners are encouraged to ensure safety measures.
On the other hand, the government should allocate funds in the national budget to ensure that the victims get compensation on time, they said.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment and Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) organised the seminar on the prevention of occupational diseases at Jatiya Press Club.
According to a report prepared on the basis of newspaper monitoring by the OSHE, some 1363 workers died and 830 were injured due to various work related accidents in 2012.
Factory fires, electrocution, boiler explosion, collapse of buildings and suffocation from gas leakages were among the main reasons behind the deaths and injuries, it said.
