A verdict in question
Locals, teachers and students of Jalshuka-Nasharpur Government Primary School in Saturia upazila yesterday demanded immediate release of a teacher of the school, who was jailed for sexually harassing a female student.
They brought out a procession in the area at 11:00am in favour of their demand.
Addressing a gathering, vice chairman of upazila parishad Shafiul Alam Jewel rejected a mobile court verdict that sentenced Md Rafiqul Islam to six months' imprisonment for stalking saying the allegation brought against him was false.
A section of people of the area demanded Tk 50,000 from the teacher after he gave punishment to the class four girl last week, locals said.
As he refused to pay the amount, they made a false allegation of sexual harassment to upazila nirbahi officer Shahin Akter who led the court, alleged Shafiul. The court then gave the verdict on Thursday.
The chairman also threatened to go for tougher agitation if the demand was no met immediately.
