87 Jamaat-Shibir men charged

Police yesterday submitted a charge sheet against 87 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat backed Islami Chhatra Shibir, including Jamaat Chittagong city unit president ANM Shamsul Islam and central leader Shahjahan Chowdhury, on charge of attacking police in September 2011.
The charge sheet was submitted with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Nure Alam, said court sources.
Sub-Inspector Md Kamruzzaman, also the investigation officer, said 32 prosecution witnesses are mentioned in the charge sheet.
Out of the 87 accused 39 have been arrested, he added.
On September 19, 2011, Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession from city's Muradpur intersection vandalising at least 25 vehicles along the way. They also attacked Abdul Mannan, the then assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Panchlaish zone, and Mannan's bodyguard Redwan.
Meanwhile, Jamaat, Chittagong city unit, in a written statement, demanded withdrawal of the “false” case against their leader Shamsul Islam, also Jamaat lawmaker.
