7 eligible to run for Gazipur city mayor

The regional Election Commission office yesterday announced seven out of nine applicants as eligible to run for mayor in the first Gazipur City Corporation polls scheduled for July 6.
The announcement came after the office partially completed the scrutiny of the nomination papers filed by 638 mayoral and councillor aspirants.
The seven eligible mayoral candidates are Advocate Ajmat Ullah Khan from Awami League, Prof MA Mannan from BNP, Brig (retd) Kazi Mahmud Hasan from Jatiya Party (Ershad), Maulana Fazlur Rahman from Islami Oikya Forum, Mezba Uddin Rubel Sarker from Jatiyatabadi Projonmo Dal, businessman Md Aman Ullah, and lawyer Rina Sultana.
A total of 638 people, including nine for mayor, 499 for 57 general councillor posts, and 130 women for 19 reserved councillor posts for female, filed their nomination papers.
The scrutiny of the applications of the councillor aspirants was underway when the report was filed around 7:45pm last night.
