6 including Mufti Hannan, NCC councillor indicted
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police yesterday indicted six persons in a case filed in connection with the bomb attack on Awami League office at Chashara in Narayanganj on June 16, 2001 that killed 20 people and injured over 50.
Police also cleared 31 persons, including district BNP President Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker, of the charges.
The six charged are Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami (Huji) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan, militant leader Obaidullah Rahman, Narayanganj City Corporation Councillor Shawkat Hashem Shaku, Shahadatullah Jewel, and twin brothers Anisul Morsalin and Muhibul Mottakin.
Narayanganj CID ASP Ehsanuddin Chowdhury, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the court of the chief judicial magistrate.
IO Ehsanuddin said the investigation found involvement of eight people in the bomb attack. But the six people have been indicted finally excluding two others - Jubo Dal activist Mominullah David and Kajal. Because, he said David was killed in "crossfire" in 2004 and Kajal also died in the meantime.
Of the six accused, Obaidullah and Shaku are on bail while Mufti Hannan and Jewel are in Bangladeshi jail and Morsalin and Mottakin are in Indian jail.
A case was filed against 39 people, including then district BNP general secretary Taimur and its 26 activists, after the bomb attack.
