At least five activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir were killed and three bullet-hit when they clashed with joint forces in two upazilas of Satkhira early today, police said.

Three activists of Jamaat and its student wing were killed in separate incidents of clashes in Sadar upazila while two more in Debhata upazila, reports a correspondent from Satkhira quoting Chowdhury Manjurul Kabir, superintendent of police (SP) in the district.

The killings took place when the Jamaat-Shibir men attacked the law enforcers who went there to arrest some people accused in the cases filed in connection with the recent spate of violence in the district, the SP added.

The joint forces arrested nine Jamaat-Shibir men from the spots.

Enraged by the unbridled violence of Jamaat-Shibir men, locals vandalised and torched 14 houses of the party men in Sadar and Debhata upazilas.

One of the deceased was identified as Jahangir Hossain, 25, a Shibir activist.

Two bullet-hit Jamaat men—Abdur Rauf, 32, and Reyazul Islam, 35— and a local Ainul Islam, 38,—were admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Police personnel and the member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) began the drive around 2:00am to nab the persons accused in a number of cases mostly filed in connection with recent hartal and blockade violence, the police chief of the district said.

When a team of joint forces reached Agardari area of Sadar upazila, the Jamaat-Shibir men attacked them hurling innumerable crude bombs and throwing brick chips.

At  one stage of self-defence, the law enforcers retaliated with fire, leaving Hossain dead on the spot, the SP said.

In a separate incident in Padmasakra area of the upazila, the Jamaat-Shibir men swooped on the police and BGB men, leading to gunfire. Two party men died on the spot.

Their identities could not be known immediately.

In Debhata upazila, the Jamaat-Shibir men attacked the law enforcers at Shakhipur in the same way, prompting the police and BGB personnel to open fire.

Two party activists were killed in the clash. Their identities also could not be known immediately.

During the drive, the law enforcers arrested three Jamaat-Shibir men from Kolaroa and six from Debhata, the SP added.
