35-km tailback on Dhaka-Ctg highway

Hundreds of passengers remained stuck in a 35-kilometre tailback on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for hours after two covered vans collided in Daudkandi upazila of Comilla early Tuesday.
The gridlock, created around 1:30am, started to ease at noon after police removed the damaged vans.
Describing the incident, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gouripur Highway Police, told The Daily Star that two covered vans collided on the Meghna-Gumti Bridge at Gomta area in Chandina upazila.
The drivers and other staff of the two vehicles sustained minor injuries in the accident, reports our Comilla correspondent.
Soon scores of vehicles got stuck on both the sides of the bridge on the busy highway ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, creating a along gridlock.
Hundreds of passengers got stuck in their vehicles caught in a 35km gridlock spreading to Bhater Char area in Gazaria of Munshiganj.
Police removed the two damaged covered vans with wreckers around the noon Tuesday, the police official said.
