4 risky CMCH buildings evacuated in Ctg
Chittagong district administration yesterday evacuated four adjoining buildings in the city's Goanchi Bagan (Guava Garden) area after the balcony of another neighbouring building collapsed on Sunday.
Class IV staff of Chittagong Medical College Hospital used to reside there.
On Sunday, a three-storey building was evacuated and sealed off after its first-floor balcony collapsed.
The CMCH authorities initially instructed the 48 families living in the buildings to relocate to different residences on their own but now the authorities are trying to recover their land from illegal occupiers to relocate the families there, said Dr Sheikh Shahabuddin Ahmed, deputy director of CMCH.
“We asked the district administration in a meeting yesterday to evict the illegal occupiers from our land,” he said.
But until the land is recovered, the families have to manage their residences on their own and their house rent will not be deducted from their salaries, added the deputy director.
Meanwhile, the affected families are struggling to move away immediately.
Tapan Das, an employee of CMCH, said, “I do not know where I will go. The authorities instructed us to move away but they did not manage alternative places for us to live in.”
