4 killed in Mumbai building collapse
At least four people were reported killed and seven others injured when a portion of a four–storey building collapsed in Mahim district on Monday after heavy downpour.
Rescue efforts are still on to save around eight members of a family, suspected to be that of criminal lawyer Rizwan Merchant, feared to be trapped under the debris of the collapsed building, locals in the area have said, according to Zeenews.com.
Merchant had represented actor Sanjay Dutt in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and had represented him in court when he surrendered last month.
The building known as 'Altaf' is located on Cadell Road.
With three more persons succumbing to injuries, the death toll in the Central Mumbai building collapse has risen to four, civic officials said on Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Mhaisani Baatliwala, 75, Halima Sheikh, 50, and Mobin Lakha , 18, they said.
While Sheikh died at the Sion Hospital, two others succumbed at the Hinduja Hospital.
On Monday, an elderly woman identified as Zaibunissa Abdul Sattar Laakha (76) was killed and six persons were injured when a portion of a four-storey building caved in, apparently due to rain, in Mahim.
According to BMC, debris removal operations are still on at the collapse site of 'Altaf', located on Cadell Road.
The injured were admitted to Bhabha Hospital in suburban Bandra, KEM and at Sion Hospital among others.
