340 killed in 10 dists last yr

SATKHIRA, Jan 19: At least 340 her sons were killed by the miscreants during 1999 in 10 district under Khulna division.

Of the killings, 36 are political leaders and activists and 13 elected representatives. The political leaders and activists included 20 from Awami League, 10 from BNP and 6 from Jatiya Samaj Tantrick Dal (JSD).

During the period, AL and its front organisations' activists who were killed are Shahjahan, Anwar Hossain, Jahir Uddin Panna, Ram Biswas, Khalid, Shahin all of Khulna city, FM Siraj and Manik of Khalishpur and Bikash and Hasan both of Daulatpur in Khulna, Matiar Rahman of Bagdanga Ripon of Jessore town and Abdul Kader of Manirampur all in Jessore, Ayub Ali of Kumarkhali and Ismail Hossain of Hakania in Alamdanga thana, both of Kushtia, Shariful Islam of Shailkupa, and Shahidul Islam of Barobazar, both in Jhenidah and Enamul Haq of Meherpur.

The BNP activists who were killed are Abdul Hakim of Sharsha, Altaf Hossain of Lebutala, Sagar of Fatepur, Tipu of Karbala, Helal of Pagladah, Kawsar Ali of Gazi Kamrul, both of Abhoynagar all in Jessore, Rafiqul Islam, student of Khulna BL College and Elahi Baksa of Kaligonj in Jhenidah and the JSD leaders and activists included. JSD central leader Kazi Aref Ahmed, Lokman, Eyakub Ali, Israil and Shamsher who were killed in brushfire of the assailants at Kalidaspur ground in Daulatpur thana of Kushtia and Abu Bakar Siddique of Denvia in Kushtia was also killed during the period.

The elected representatives who were killed are Akbar Ali, chairman of Jhhaudia UP in Kushtia, Mostofa Habib chairman of Surkhali UP in Batia ghata thana and Abul Hossain, Chairman, Sreefala UP in Rupsa thana under Khulna and Abdul Baki, Chairman of Gangni UP in Gangni thana of Meherpur district. Besides, nine other sitting or former UP members were also killed by the miscreants during the period.
