33% SIM duty cut proposed
The government has proposed reduction of duty on SIM (subscriber identity module) cards from 30 to 20 in the upcoming fiscal year.
"Considering its (SIM) importance to the expansion of telephone sector, this high rate of 30 percent SD [supplementary duty] is being proposed to be reduced to 20 percent," Finance Minister AMA Muhith said in his budget speech Thursday.
A 30-percent supplementary duty was imposed on import of SIM cards keeping in mind the interest of local SIM cards producers and the rate is in force for a good number of years, he said.
Saying that several steps were taken during past as part of the government's 'Digital Bangladesh' project, the finance minister proposed reduction of customs duty on digital cameras and web camera to 10 percent from 25 percent.
"Server Rack generally imported with server for its maintenance is subject to 61.09 percent duty and tax incidence including 25 percent customs duty. This high duty tax incidence and rates are against the government policies, pursued for the expansion of ICT [Information and communications technology].
Muhith also proposed the customs duty to be reduced to 10 percent.
