At least 30 sex workers (prostitutes) were injured on Tuesday as the activists of an Islamist outfit attacked a brothel in Puranbazar area of Madaripur town.
Members of Islahe Quam Parishad, a religion-based organisation, forcefully evicted around 500 sex workers from the brothel around 11:30am, said Nasirul Islam, additional superintendent of police in Madaripur.
The official said the attackers also confined the female sex workers, vandalised properties and looted valuables during the attack at the red light block, reports our Madaripur correspondent.
Islahe Quam Parishad has been demonstrating for long to get the brothel evicted, the ASP added.
Police fired several rounds of blank shots to control the situation. Later, they brought out the girls from the brothel, the police official said.
Advocate Sujit Chatarjee Bappy, a public prosecution of Madaripur Judge's Court, said there is a High Court order not to evict the brothel forcefully, so the eviction should have been done lawfully.
"We were told that we will be rehabilitated. Now, we have been evicted in such a way. Where will we take shelter? What are we supposed to eat?" an aggrieved sex worker told this correspondent.
