2nd day of CHT hartal progresses peacefully

The second day of a 72-hour hartal (shutdown) enforced by Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad (PBCP) and Parbatya Gono Parishad (PGP) is progressing peacefully in three hill districts on Wednesday.

Bangalee Settlers under the banners of PBCP and PGP went on the hartal from Tuesday morning in Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari protesting the approval to the CHT Land Commission (Amendment) Bill by the cabinet.

In Rangamati, pro-hartal activists have blocked Manarupa and Vedvedi areas in the town since the morning.

All modes of vehicles including buses remained off the roads and most shops kept their shutters down during the hartal hours, reported our Rangamati correspondent.

In Bandarban, roadside shops were kept open.

The vehicular movements in the district roads were also seen normal since the morning.

In Khagrachhari, hartal supporters blockaded Changi Square in the town by burning tyres around 7:30am.

Law enforcers dispersed them immediate after they took to the Square, reports our Khagrachhari correspondent.

All modes of vehicles except CNG-run auto-rickshaws and rickshaws were seen plying the roads in the morning.

Most shops kept their shutters down since the morning.

The decision to enforce the shutdown was taken at a joint meeting of the two organisations on Sunday night.

Earlier, Parbatya Chattagram Samoadhikar Andolon, a platform of Bangalee settlers in the CHT, also enforced a 3-day strike in Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari districts from June 9 to 11 on the same ground.
