27,87,000 tons of sugarcane may be crushed in 15 mills
The government has fixed a target of sugar production at 2,23,500 tons in 15 sugar mills of the country in the current season.
Under the programme, 27,87,000 tons of sugarcane are expected to be crushed in these mills, official sources said.
Farmers expect a good harvest of sugarcane and the production target is likely to be achieved. But the quantity of sugar being smuggled into the country from India per year is much higher than the local production target, it was learnt.
Sugarcane farmers and experts urged the government to modernise or privatise the sugar mills to avoid huge loss during crushing.
According to sources, a total of 18,600 tons of sugar will be produced by crushing 2,40,000 tons of sugarcane in Joypurhat Sugar Mills, 9,900 tons of sugar from 1,20,000 tons of sugarcane in Shyampur Sugar Mills, 13,050 tons of sugar from 1,45,000 tons of sugarcane in Rangpur Sugar Mills, 11,200 tons of sugar from 1,40,000 tons of sugarcane in Setabganj Sugar Mills, 14,400 tons of sugar from 1,80,000 tons of sugarcane in Thakurgaon Sugar Mills, 13,200 tons of sugar from 1,50,000 tons of sugarcane in Panchagarh Sugar Mills, 18,980 tons of sugar from 2,60,000 tons of sugarcane in Rajshahi Sugar Mills, 20,000 tons of sugar from 2,50,000 tons of sugarcane in Natore Sugar Mills, 19,845 tons of sugar from 2,70,000 tons of sugarcane in Uttarbangla Sugar Mills, 9,688 tons of sugar from 1,25,000 tons of sugarcane in Pabna Sugar Mills, 13,680 tons of sugar from 1,80,000 tons of sugarcane in Kushtia Sugar Mills, 17,000 tons of sugar from 2,00,000 tons of sugarcane in Darshana Keru Company Sugar Mills, 18,240 tons of sugar from 2,40,000 tons of sugarcane in Mobarakganj Sugar Mills, 13,200 tons of sugar from 1,60,000 tons of sugarcane in Faridpur Sugar Mills and 10,537 tons of sugar will be produced through crushing 1,27,000 tons of sugarcane in Zilbangla Sugar Mills.
