3 killed in AL-Jamaat clash
Three people were killed and 15 injured in a clash between Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islami at Omarpur village of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Bashir Ahmed, 36, a teacher of Bhabanipur Fajil Madrasa and Jamaat’s secretary of ward No 5 of Shibganj municipality, Nasir Uddin, 45, and Norshed Ali, 50, AL activists.
Police and locals said the clash erupted around 1:20pm centering an arbitration meeting, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station, said a meeting of AL was held at a house of local AL leader Bashir Ahmed at Bhabanipur village around 1:20pm. When Bashir was returning home from his madrasa, AL men swooped on him.
Hearing the news, Jamaat men went to the area and engaged in a clash with the AL men.
Supporters of both groups carrying bamboo sticks and lethal weapons got involved in a clash, leaving at least 17 persons injured.
During the clash, they also exploded at least 50 hand made bombs.
Locals rushed the injured to different hospitals. Bashir succumbed to his injuries on way to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex around 2:10pm and Nasir died on way to Chapainawabganj Sadar hospital around 4:45pm.
Later, Norshed succumbed to his injuries around 8:30pm at the hospital, Abdur Razzak, sub-inspector of the police station told the correspondent.
Receiving information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
