16 more listed criminals in army dragnet
The joint forces arrested 64 people including 16 'listed criminals' from different areas of the country in the last 24 hours ending at 8:00am yesterday.
They also recovered nine two pistols, one revolver, five country-made guns, one rifle and 168 bullet.
With these, the number of arrested people rose to 10,681 including 2,345 'listed criminals' and that of firearms to 1,939 since the army, BDR and police jointly launched the anti-crime drive on October 17.
In the city, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Reaz Ahmed was picked up from a function at Mohammadpur Girls School yesterday and was released from Mohammadpur army camp after interrogation, sources said.
In Faridpur, the joint forces picked up two alleged criminals -- AFM Qaium Gangi and Imadadul Haque Chowdhury -- after searching their residences. They were being interrogated at an army camp till writing of this report yesterday evening, our correspondent reported.
Our Madaripur correspondent reported that joint forces arrested two accomplices of 'top criminal' Liakot Sheikh from Rajoir. Arrested Sekender Munshi and Nuruddin were handed over to Rajoir police after interrogation.
Liakot, who was an aspirant Union Parishad chairman candidate, was arrested on Wednesday from East Sharmangal area in Rajoir but his accomplices snatched him and fled in a speedboat. One of the two arrested yesterday was the proposer and the other was the seconder of Liakot's candidature, which could not be filed due to their absence.
Four persons were arrested in Rangpur. They are Gangachara upazila Awami League secretary Mujibur Rahman Pramanik, district Jubo Dal president Liton Parvez, Jubo Dal activist Shahidul Islam Mithu and JCD activist Atiqul Islam.
They were handed over to Kotwali police.
Meanwhile, the police headquarters in the city in a press release last night said they arrested 992 people including 14 'identified criminals' from different areas of the country in the last 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday.
They also recovered four firearms along with 12 rounds of bullet.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police in a press release said they arrested 190 people including 25 'wanted criminals' during special drives in the city in the last 24 hours.s
