15 fishermen abducted from Meghna
Robbers kidnapped 14 fishermen from near Baluar Char (landmass emerged from the river Meghna) adjacent to Hatia upazila of Noakhali and Monpura upazila of Bhola districts .early yesterday.
Char Nizam police camp sources said a gang of armed robbers swooped on 15 fishermen while they were fishing on board three fishing trawlers in the Meghna River at around 4:00am.
As the fishermen tried to resist the robbers, they opened fire, leaving a fisherman named Md Zakir injured. The gang took away 14 fishermen along with two trawlers and fishing nets.
Zakir was in another trawler and brought to Charfashion Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, doctors of health complex referred him Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College hospital.
Being informed, a police team from Char Nizam police camp led by ASI Guljar Ahmed raided Baluar Char area yesterday morning. They arrested 15 robbers and recovered the two looted trawlers from there.
The arrestees are Abdul Kashem, Lokman, Ruhul Amin, Jahangir, Ismail, Abdur Rab, Babul Mistri, Moin Uddin, Bellal, Burnobi, Nurul Islam, Nurul Islam (2), Kabir, Jamal and Alauddin.
They all are from South Sakuchia union under Monpura and Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola district.Police said the drive is on to rescue the abducted the fishermen.
Police early Wednesday rescued 19 of 21 fishermen who were abducted from the Meghna in Monpura upazila of the district on Tuesday night.
