18 hurt in clashes

At least 18 people including 11 police personnel were injured in clashes between the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and law enforcers during half-day hartal (shutdown) in Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni and Chapainawabganj on Sunday.
The Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised three vehicles and blasted at least 15 cocktails, reported our district correspondents.
The BNP-Jamaat-led 18-party alliance enforced an eight-hour hartal in Chapainawabganj protesting the arrest of Keramat Ali, nayeb-e-ameer of district Jamaat.
On the other hand, the district units of Shibir observed a six-hour hartal in the three other districts to protest the arrest of its three leaders -- Fakhruddin Manik, former central president, Atiqul Islam, office secretary and Mahsinul Kabir, international affairs secretary of Shibir.
LAXMIPUR
Seven police personnel and six Shibir men were were injured in a clash at Uttar Temuhuni of the town around 7:30am.
Altaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, is among the injured policemen.
The clash erupted when Shibir activists hurled brick chips on police from a procession after being resisted by them.
Police fired several rounds of teargas shells and shot blank fires to bring the situation under control.
The Shibir activists vandalised a covered van and a truck in Laxmipur municipal and Bagbari areas during the hartal.
NOAKHALI
Shibir brought out a brisk procession in Rashid Colony area of the town and vandalised a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.
The auto-rickshaw driver sustained injuries during the incident.
Besides, police, in a pre-hartal, raid arrested 14 Shibir men apprehending that they might carry our sabotage in the district.
CHAPAINAWABGANJ
Jamaat-Shibir activists hurled at least 15 cocktails during a chase and counter-chase with police in Shibtala area of the town.
Four police personnel received minor injuries during the incident, said Bazlur Rashid, OC of Sadar Police Station.
Police and witnesses said the chase and counter-chase took place when police barred a procession of Jamaat-Shibir men around 6:45 am.
Law enforcers fired several rounds of bullets from shotguns and dispersed them.
Police also recovered two unexploded cocktails in front of PTI and Shibtala area, the OC said.
Law enforcers arrested Shibganj upazila chairman Keramat Ali from his house at Jalmachhmari in Shibganj municipal area on Saturday in several criminal cases filed for assaulting police and carrying out subversive activities.
Later, the 18-party alliance announced the hartal in protest against the arrest.
