JCD activist murdered in Mymensingh

Unidentified miscreants hacked an activist of pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal to death in Mymensingh yesterday evening, said police.
Asif Parvez Tupan, 23, an LLB second year student of a Kishoreganj college, was a member of the Nandail upazila unit of JCD, said Kazi Ayub, officer-in-charge of Nandail Police Station.
Attacked behind Nandail College in the upazila, he succumbed to his injuries at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on arrival, he said.
Shahidul new envoy to Saudi Arabia

The government has decided to appoint Md Shahidul Islam, currently serving as Bangladesh ambassador in Saudi Arabia, as the next high commissioner to Malaysia, says a foreign ministry press release.
Before his current ambassadorial appointment in KSA, he was Bangladesh high commissioner in South Africa.
In his diplomatic career, Shahidul also served the Bangladesh missions in Brussels, Colombo, Abu Dhabi, Rome, and Los Angeles in different capacities.
Smuggled gold found in imported car's radiator at Dhaka airport

Customs officials recovered 40 gold bars, worth Tk 2.25 crore and weighing 4.5kg, from inside a radiator of a car at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka yesterday.
On information, customs officials conducted a drive at Airport Sorting office of Bangladesh Postal Department and recovered the gold. The radiator was imported from Dubai for Nur Electronics in Chittagong by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, said the officials.
Fugitive convict held in Ctg after Jhalakathi jailbreak

Detectives arrested a convicted criminal at Jharnapara in Chittagong city yesterday, 12 days after his jailbreak from Jhalakathi prison.
Monir Hossain, 30, of Phulhari in Jhalakathi, was sentenced to a three-year imprisonment by a Jhalakathi court in a theft case after he had been arrested three months ago, said Rajesh Barua, sub-inspector of the Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
Monir, who was held in a shop in Chittagong, will be handed over to Jhalakathi police, he said.
Buet alumni reunion on February 27, registration date extended

The reunion of Buet alumni will be held on February 27, says a press release.
Earlier the date was January 30 but due to the current political situation in the country it had been changed.
Meanwhile, the last date for registration has been extended till February 22.
Eastern Bank replaces HSBC as US visa fee recepient

HSBC will no longer issue the MRV (visa) fee receipt or accept payment for US visa interview after today, said a press release.
Eastern Bank Ltd will issue the MRV fee receipt and accept payment for visa appointment booking from Sunday.

If anyone already purchased an HSBC fee receipt it is still valid. Fee receipts are valid for one year.
Youth's decomposing body found in Gazipur

Police recovered the decomposing body of an unidentified youth, aged around 25, from a forest inside the Kaliakoir High Tech Park in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur yesterday.
Police suspected that miscreants might have killed the youth about five to six days back and dumped the body there.
The body of the youth clad in a black jacket and pants was sent to Gazipur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Robbers loot house in Rangpur

Armed robbers looted valuables worth Tk 30 lakh from a house in Mahiganj-Dewantuli area of Rangpur city early yesterday.
Police said a gang of 15-20 robbers entered the house breaking open the door after tying the night guard.
They snapped the power line and took the house members hostage at gunpoint before looting. They also beat up the guard as he tried to resist them.
Two suspected members of the gang were arrested following a case filed in this connection.
Tapantosh to get Buet alumni reception

The Association of Buet Alumni will accord a reception to one of the alumni, Dr Tapantosh Chakrabarty, of the chemical engineering department of 1972 batch, for his professional achievements and being the first Bangladeshi to complete the Seven Continents Marathon.
The event will be held at 4:00pm tomorrow in the Seminar Hall of Civil Engineering Building, says a press release. Former Buet Vice-Chancellor Abdul Matin Patwari, and incumbent VC Khaleda Ekram are expected to attend the programme.
Road crash kills bicyclist

A man was killed when a tractor hit his bicycle on Thakurgaon Bus Stand-Thakurgaon Railway Station road in Laxmipur village under Thakurgaon Sadar on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased was Niren Chandra, 27, of Nekmarad village in Ranishankoil upazila of the district.
