Ctg cops sue 59 JCD, Jubo Dal men for hartal violence

Kotwali police sued 19 identified and 40 unidentified leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal Monday night for vandalising vehicles in Chittagong city during BNP-led alliance's countrywide hartal on that day.
JCD Chittagong city unit President Gazi Mohammad Siraj Ullah, General Secretary Belayet Hossain Bulu and Jubo Dal Vice-president Shamsul Huq are among the accused, said Sub-inspector Bikash Chandra Shil.

 

 

 

Submissions from journos invited  for Bazlur Rahman Memorial Award

The Liberation War Museum has invited submissions of original investigative reports or features in print and electronic media on the 1971 war for Bazlur Rahman Memorial Award 2014, says a release.
A reporter or feature writer of print media and a producer of electronic media will receive the accolade--a medal and Tk 1 lakh--in March 2015, for their works published and broadcast in 2014.
Submissions must be made by January 31, 2015.
Past awardees will not be eligible to apply for three years.
Bazlur Rahman, former editor of the daily Sangbad, died in 2008, aged 67.

 

 

 

Shibir activist held in Ctg

Police arrested an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir from Bakalia area of Chittagong city yesterday.
The arrestee Mofakhkher Hossain, 21, of Lohagara upazila in Chittagong, is accused in three cases filed over subversive activities during hartals enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance in January this year, police said.

 

 

 

Road crashes kill 6, injure 20

Five people were killed and 20 others injured when a bus fell into a roadside ditch as the driver lost control over the vehicle on Panchagarh-Dinajpur highway in Prembazar village of Birganj upazila of Dinajpur yesterday.
The deceased were Golam Mostafa, 38, of Nimtola Balubari; Korban Ali, 45, of Gaibandha; Shamima Akter, 30, of Jamtoli village; Laila Begum, 19, of Muchibari village and an unidentified man.
In Jamalpur, Riyad, 8, son of Anisur Rahman of Daulatpur village died when a tractor ran him over on Sarishabari-Tarakandi road in Sarishabari upazila on Monday.

 

 

 

US embassy closed tomorrow for New Year's Day

The American embassy in Dhaka, including the Consular Section and the American Center with the Archer K Blood American Center Library and the Student Advising Center, will remain closed tomorrow on the occasion of New Year's Day.
This is an American holiday, says a press release yesterday.
Emergency services for American citizens will be available. Please call 5566-2000 and ask for the duty officer.
