Belal new envoy to the Netherlands

The government has decided to appoint Sheikh Mohammed Belal, who is currently serving as a director general (East Asia and Pacific wing) in the foreign ministry, as ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Based in The Hague, Belal will also be concurrently accredited to Poland and Bosnia-Herzegovina, said a foreign ministry press release yesterday.
An officer of Bangladesh Foreign Service, Belal obtained a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University, USA.
During his career in foreign service, he conducted diplomatic assignments in Bangladesh embassies in Australia, Malaysia, USA and Uzbekistan.
Hanging body of fish trader recovered in Gazipur

Police recovered the body of a fish trader from a mango tree at Goalarchala village in Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur yesterday, a day after he went missing.
The deceased was Mobarak Hossain, 30, son of Hazrat Ali, of the area.
Quoting his family, Kaliakair police said Mobarak went to work on Sunday afternoon and did not return.
Laily Begum, victim's wife, said their neighbour Azhar might have killed Mobarak as the two clashed a few days ago over a land dispute.
Police sent the body to Gazipur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
US embassy closed tomorrow

The American embassy, including the consular section and the American Center with the Archer K Blood American Center Library and the EducationUSA Student Advising Center, will be closed tomorrow on the occasion of New Year's Day.
Emergency services for American citizens will be available at 885-5500, said a press release.
Youth arrested with Phensedyl in Gazipur

Police arrested a youth and sized 32 bottles of Phensedyl from his residence in Banarhawla village under Kaligonj Paurasabha in the district yesterday.
The arrestee is Shamim, 20, of the area.
Kaliganj police said on information, they raided the house of Faizul and sized the bottles from his reading table.
A case was filed in this connection.

Laila president, Gias general secretary of Ctg Samiti-Dhaka

Laila Siddique and Md Gias Uddin Khan have been elected president and general secretary respectively of Chattagram Samiti-Dhaka for 2014-2015 session.
The 35-member executive committee includes: vice presidents Md Abdul Karim, Dipok Kanti Chowdhury, Muhammad Maruf Shah Chowdhury, Sultan Mahmud and Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, treasurer Nasir Uddin, joint general secretaries Abdul Mabud and Md Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury Hero, press and publication secretary Mustafa Iqbal Chowdhury Mukul, organising secretary Shafiqur Rahman Shafiq and office secretary Shahidul Islam Shahid.

Rezaul Hoque new chairman of Bangladesh Lions Foundation

Ln AKM Rezaul Hoque MJF was elected chairman of Bangladesh Lions Foundation for the year 2013-2015 at its 37th Annual General Meeting held in Lion Humayun Zahir Auditorium in Lions Bhaban in the capital's Begum Rokeya Sarani on Friday.
At present, Rezaul is serving as GLT coordinator, MD-315 and also as chairman and managing director of NF Group.
Rezaul, a businessman, has been involved in various social activities and development works for the last 19 years.
