Attempt to revive Baksal on

Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League (Baksal) has applied to the Election Commission to register as a political party.
"We sustain the ideology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We want to revive his theory of second revolution," its chairman Sharif Muhammed Amiruzzaman told The Daily Star.
“We hope we are approved as we have fulfilled all conditions needed to register,” he added.
The EC's deputy secretary confirmed the application and said the commission would take further necessary steps.
3 firms fined Tk 58 lakh for pollution

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined three factories at Mymensingh and Narshindi a total of Tk 58 lakh for polluting the environment.
Shepherd Group at Bagrapara, Mahdin Sweaters at Bhaluka, both in Mymensingh, and Uniloy Textile Ltd, in Narshindi's Madhobdi, used to discharge untreated water into the nearby Khiru river, said a DoE press release.
DoE sources said the Shepherd Group was earlier fined Tk 50 lakh in 2012 and Tk 39 lakh in April 2014.
Road crashes kill two

A schoolboy died when a container-laden lorry ran him over on Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Fouzderhat at Sitakunda upazila yesterday, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
The deceased was Pial Das, 10, son of Kalabashi of North Salimpur.
Our Pabna Correspondent adds, Sabera Khatun, 70, died when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw hit her near her house on Chatmoar-Chaikola road in Chatmohar upazila yesterday.
Man gets life term for raping girl in Ctg

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a school girl in Banskhali upazila of Chittagong.
The court also fined the convict, Tajul Islam, 55, of Sadanpur of the upazila, Tk 50,000. He remains absconding.
According to the prosecution, Tajul raped his neighbour in his house on July 5, 2013.
The victim's brother later filed a case against Tajul.
11kg of gold seized at Dhaka airport

Customs officials seized 100 gold bars, weighing 11.7kg, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital yesterday.
The gold bars worth around Tk 5.5 crore were found unclaimed and wrapped with scotch tapes under a seat of a flight of Fly Dubai Airlines that landed at the airport around 11:00am from Dubai, said Farid Al Mamun, assistant commissioner of the Customs.
The officials are investigating the incident to identify the smugglers, he said.
