Birdem patient's death blamed on nurses' negligence

Relatives of a 65-year-old diabetes and tuberculosis patient, who died at the capital's Birdem hospital yesterday, complained about negligence by nurses.
In black and white they said nurses were negligent in arranging a diagnosis timely, said Birdem Director Shahidul Haque Mollick.
A three-member committee headed by clinical service Director Dr Mirza Mahbubul Alam was formed, he said.
“The patient, some Bhuiyan, was prescribed an ultrasonography this morning. But, he died suddenly before conducting the test. We think the patient died of heart attack,” said Mollick.
CDA orders 40 building owners to demolish illegal extensions

Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) yesterday ordered owners of around 40 buildings, which are built defying the CDA master plan on the both sides of Mehedibagh road in Chittagong city, to demolish the illegal and risky portions.
CDA officials said the high-rises occupy roadside government land and causes traffic chaos. The demolition should be done by May 21, said the officials, adding that if the owners do not follow the instruction, CDA will bulldoze those.
Under a project to expand the 30-foot road to 50-foot, the CDA will conduct drives twice in a month.
BCL suspends 3 JU unit activists

Pro-Awami League Bangladesh Chhatra League yesterday suspended three activists of its Jahangirnagar University unit over involving a factional clash at JU.
The suspended Arif and Rokonuzzaman of geography department; and Selim of law and justice, are the third year students residing Maulana Bhasani Hall.
The suspension order came from BCL central Office Secretary Sheikh Rasel, confirmed JU BCL Secretary Razib Ahmed.
The clash erupted Friday night over establishing supremacy at the hall, injuring at least 3 activists.
NDF BD Debate Festival starts May 16

The Two-day long 8th NDF BD National Debate Festival will began at Bangla Academy Auditorium in Dhaka on May 16.
Around 2,000 students from different Schools, colleges, universities and madrasas are expected to participate in the festival organised by the National Debate Federation Bangladesh (NDF BD).

Patuakhali road crash kills two

Two motorcyclists were killed when a human hauler and the motorbike collided head-on on Patuakhali-Baufal road in Rajnagar area of Baufal upazila of Patuakhali Monday night.
The deceased were Nayeem, 14, and Pavel, 17, of Boga village in Baufal.
Baufal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Noresh Chandra Karmaker said Nayeen died on the spot while Pavel on the way to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Myanmar citizen arrested with gold bars in Ctg

Police arrested a Myanmar citizen with 6 gold bars, weighing 9.9kg worth Tk 50 lakh, from Karnaphuli Shah Amanat Bridge area in Chittagong city early yesterday.
Mohammad Salam, 40, came to Bangladesh with a Myanmar passport through Teknaf on a business visa on Friday.
During primary interrogation, Salam said one Ali Ahmed in Myanmar gave him the bars to hand over to someone in Chittagong. However, he could not tell the name.
Police suspect that Salam is involved in an international gold smuggling racket. A case is under process.
Illegal timber, boat worth Tk 68 lakh seized in Ctg

Coast Guard detained six people with 759 cubic feet illegal timber and a wooden boat, used for carrying the timber, worth Tk 68 lakh altogether from the river Karnaphuli in the Port area of Chittagong city Monday night.
On information, coast guard seized the timber -- Shal, Garjan and Ghamari -- around 9:30pm, says a press release.
