School student dies 2 days after being set on fire in Sylhet

An SSC candidate, who suffered 80 percent burns in an attack by local goons in Sylhet two days ago, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday afternoon.
Ehtesham Ul Haque Shaon, son of Enamul Haque, was a student of Al Raian International School & College.
The miscreants set him on fire by pouring petrol on him in Osmani Medical College Hospital area Saturday. Police said Shaon was attacked as he protested a stalking in Sylhet city's Munshipara weeks ago.
Day-labourer dies from electrocution in Ctg

A day-labourer was killed and eight others were injured from electrocution after a live electric cable fell on them while they were digging soil for a drain in New Market area in Chittagong city yesterday afternoon.
The deceased was Parul Akter, 35, of Comilla.
Amena Katun, Bilkis Begum, Md Jahangir, Abdus Sattar, Md Nasir, Parul Begum, Md Jasim and Mani Begum were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said police.
Mob beats rickshaw van puller to death

A mob beat a rickshaw van puller to death for attempting to steal from a stationary shop in the capital's Uttar khan area yesterday.
The deceased was Rahom Ali of Jamalpur.
Younus Ali, officer-in-charge of Uttar Khan Police Station, said Rahom along with two others broke into the tin-shed shop in Taltola around 3:00am. Locals rushed to the shop after hearing screams of Milu, the shop owner who was sleeping inside.
Woman 'kills herself'

A speech-impaired housewife allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her residence in the capital's Uttara yesterday.
The deceased was Aklima Akter Akhi, 24, wife of Abu Kawser Rana.
Abul Khayer, the deceased's father, discovered the body in the morning and called the police.
The body was sent for an autopsy.
Akhi was mentally ill, said her father, adding that his son-in-law was not home on Sunday night.
American embassy closed tomorrow

The American embassy, including the Consular Section, the American Center with the Archer K Blood American Center Library and the EducationUSA Student Advising Center, will remain closed tomorrow to celebrate the Independence Day of Bangladesh.
Emergency services for American citizens will be available. They should call 885-5500 and ask for the duty officer, said a press release.
American Center organises pop-up visit at IUB

The American Center, Dhaka organised the first ever pop-up visit at Independent University, Bangladesh yesterday to provide information about the center, library and education system in the US.
Jon Danilowicz, in charge of the affairs of the US embassy, Prof M Omar Rahman, vice chancellor of IUB, and Viraj M LeBailly, director of the center, among others, spoke.
IUB students also played video games and listened to American music on the juke box during the programme.
UK, Australia open joint visa application centre

The UK and Australia opened a joint Visa Application Centre in the capital yesterday to further enhance their partnership in providing visa services in Bangladesh.
The application centre is located in the Delta Tower Building, Road 90, Gulshan 2.
The UK will also open a new application centre with similar upgraded facilities in Sylhet in the coming weeks, said a press release.
