SCBA election on March 12-13

The 14-member executive committee of Supreme Court Bar Association will be elected by 4,044 Supreme Court lawyers through an annual poll on March 12-13.
The nomination paper submission will continue till February 27 and the deadline for withdrawal is March 3, SCBA Superintendent Nimesh Chandra Das said yesterday.
Probable candidates from the ruling Awami League-backed Bangladesh Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad to run for president are former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru, AL presidium member Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury and Rabia Bhuiyan.
Their rivals from pro-BNP Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum are expected to be former SCBA presidents Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Zainul Abedin and former state minister for law Shahjahan Omar.
Alphabet fair for children held

Paying tributes to the 1952 language movement martyrs' sacrifice, a daylong “Bornomela” (alphabet fair) for children was held in Dhaka and Chittagong yesterday.
For the fifth successive year, the Prothom Alo organised it in Sultana Kamal Women's Sports Complex in the capital.
In one of the Dhaka stalls, tiny tots diligently tried to spell in a competition while in the next stall others joined words using suffixes and prefixes to make something new.
Brussels fixes language memorial spot

The mayor of Ixelles in Brussels confirmed on February 20 a place in Gordon Bennet Course, a public park close to the Bangladesh embassy, for building a memorial for the 1952 language martyrs.
The embassy today will organise a ceremony marking International Mother Language Day, stated a foreign ministry press release yesterday.
Wife 'kills' man in capital

A woman allegedly suffocated her husband to death at their house in the capital's Sabujbagh yesterday.
The deceased Nuru Mia, 48, a staff of Rajmoni Cinema Hall, used to live with his second wife in Bashabo.
Kawser Ahmed, victim's son, said his stepmother Aleya, who is involved in drug peddling, along with her accomplices killed his father. The body was hanging from a ceiling fan with the legs touching the bed which indicates that he was first suffocated and then hanged, said Sabujbagh police. Police arrested Aleya and four others in this connection.
UP member held with 3,000 Yabas

Officials of the narcotics control department arrested a member of Gajalia union parishad of Bandarban with 3,000 Yaba pills at Moijjartek in Chittagong on Thursday.
On a tip-off, the officials arrested Mong Mra Ching Marma, 35, soon after he got off a bus around 1:30pm.
Karnaphuli police said Mong had confessed to his involvement in Yaba pills peddling.
A case was filled in this regard.
Man 'kills wife for dowry' in Pabna

A man allegedly strangled his wife for dowry in their house at Ekdhala Bhuiyanbari in Sirajganj district early yesterday.
Police detained the husband, Hridoy, and his father, Akkas Ali.
According to the case statement, filed by Parul's father, Asad Sheikh, Hridoy strangled his daughter after beating her up for dowry. Parul had been tortured for a year since her marriage, it added.
Police sent the body to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Stalker jailed in Sunamganj

A mobile court sentenced a youth to two-month imprisonment for stalking a schoolgirl in Mollikpur area of Sadar upazila in Sunamganj on Thursday.
The convict is Ala Uddin, 22, of Sadar upazila,
Being informed by the victim's father, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Tahmina Begum along with her team caught Alaudding while he was stalking the girl on her way back to home from the school.
25 hurt in Jhenidah AL factional clash

Around 25 people were injured when two factions of Awami League clashed at Shailkupa upazila in Jhenidah over lifting sand from the Kalu river.
Of the injured, Khairul Islam, Hannan Mia, Mokam Hossain, Manik Mondol, Boro Hamil Ali, Minto Ali. Ansar Ali, Foyej Ali, Selim Mollah, Jamil Hossain, Hazer Ali and Monsur Ali were admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.
Shailkupa police said Nizam Joardar, general secretary of Horara ward unit, leased some area of the Kalu river from the government. The clash ensued, when Mokam Sheikh, president of the ward, with his supporters went to the spot to lift sand but Nizam and his supporters tried to resist them.
Additional police were deployed on the spot.
Missing woman killed in Joypurhat

A woman was found murdered in a paddy field in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat yesterday morning after she had gone missing Thursday afternoon, said police.
The deceased was Rima Khatun, 18, daughter of Delbar Hossain, of Rajkanda village in Akkelpur.
Rezaus Sadique, officer-in-charge of Akkelpur Police Station, said miscreants slit her throat.
Before killing, they might have attempted to rape her, he said.
